Who Gives Like A Macedonian?

Do you remember those guys and gals?
The Macedonians?

We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.

2 Corinthians 8: 1-5

Have you begged anyone lately for “the favor of taking part in their relief”?
A favor?  Are you kidding me?
How do you give beyond your means?……that’s not possible!
How do you give from extreme poverty, in affliction?
Paul reminds us a few verses later WHO our example is:  (vs. 9)
For you know the grace of our  Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich,
yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
This ain’t natural, my friends……its “other worldly”
Its Supernatural living!
I had the privilege of giving more last year to Missions than I ever have in my life.
You can see on this Schedule A, Form 1040, of my tax return.
You might call me prideful, or boastful or egotistical!
Obviously, If I cared if you judged me in that way, I probably would not have linked to the Schedule A.
But God has used this money to do many wonderful things that I am very proud of:
A new Orphanage in Namtouang, Thailand for Homeless Hmong Children,
Support for a young, new missionary in Southeast Asia,
An opportunity for young adults to see the needs in SE Asia,
A rice cooker and beds and a well for fresh water and a burner for poor servants in SE Asia who run an orphanage,
Another orphanage in SE Asia to be built,
Computer equipment for Kathy’s Home in Pua,
Support for House Parents in our new Namtouang Orphanage
And other gifts that I simply don’t remember……But Our Father does, Paul lays it out again in
2 Corinthians 9:
The Cheerful Giver
6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap  sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give  as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 AndGod is able to make all  grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every
good work. 9 As it is written,

“He has distributed freely, he  has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”

So What are You deciding in your heart?
He gives Grace so I might have all sufficiency,
so that I may abound in every good WORK, NOT every good TALK!
Are you working or talking?
Disclaimer:  You are correct!  I am hypocritical and I have no right to judge you or anyone!!!  But, Just because I am hypocritical, doesn’t mean the word of God is not full of truth.  Read my blogs every month and pray for God’s leading.

Got Godliness? What makes self-centered Men and Women………………. Godly?

My friend and I are compiling the Memoirs of a Godly Man…………..
Probably one of the godliest men we have ever met……..and we know a lot of people…….having traveled the world many times.
It will be called “Ventures in Grace” or something close to that.

That might be the first clue to Godliness……..found in the title?
GRACE!
Not a common word in any language these days………not many people walking the streets full of Grace….
And certainly not talking about Grace or sharing it or giving it…….we are way too quick to judge!

Remember these…………….
“And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.” Acts 6:8
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
“For from His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” John 1:16

And I would have to say, regarding this Brother and the great woman of God he was married to, this verse summed up their lives…….
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” I Peter 4:10

Which brings up another character trait of this Godly man…….a good steward/servant.
Selfless……this Brother was caught up in the lives of others…………NO!
Not gossiping, or backbiting or maligning them……….. but sincerely concerned about others.

In his book, The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness, Timothy Keller tells his story………

“When I was at school, my mother kept saying things like, ‘You know, honey, you ought to join the chess club.’ I would say, ‘Mum, I hate chess.’
‘Yes, I know,’ she would say, ‘but it will look so good on your college application.’
She would try again. ‘Don’t they feed the homeless and hungry downtown, every Saturday morning?
Why don’t you volunteer for that?’ ‘Mum,’ I’d say, ‘I hate that kind of thing.’ I would get the same response,
‘I know, honey, but it would look so good on your college application.’
So, at school, I did all kinds of things that I had absolutely no interest in doing for themselves.
I was simply putting together a résumé.
That is what our egos are doing all the time. Doing jobs we have no pleasure in, doing diets we take no pleasure in.
Doing all kinds of things, not for the pleasure of doing them, but because we are trying to put together an impressive curriculum vitae.
By comparing ourselves to other people and trying to make ourselves look better than others, we are boasting.
Trying to recommend ourselves,
trying to create a self-esteem résumé because we are desperate to fill our sense of inadequacy and emptiness.
The ego is so busy. So busy all the time.”

Keller, Timothy (2013-12-06). The Freedom of Self Forgetfulness (Kindle Locations 178-179). 10Publishing. Kindle Edition.

The ego just comes natural………..you don’t have to plan or prepare…….just be your natural selfish self!!
Yes, our friend had an ego but he was so wrapped up in Christ, you seldom saw it.
Very low key, very humble….often, thinking and praying for others and ……………
Constantly, Serving! But never putting that service on his resume.

And because he was full of grace and a real servant of God,
He did “great wonders and signs among the people” he worked with! (Soon to be described in his memoirs.)
Just like Stephen!!!
What a legacy!

Poor as a church mouse…….full of grace, a servant of many, without a very impressive resume…..
He died around the age of 96 in the beloved land he had labored since 1952.
Now that’s Godliness!!
What about you?
GOT GODLINESS?

Our Father is a Person, Not a Formula…

Naturally, we are inclined to be so mathematical and calculating that we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing…………Certainty is the mark of the common sense life; gracious uncertainty is the mark of the spiritual life.  To be certain of God means that we are uncertain in all our ways, we do not know what a day may bring forth.  This is generally said with a sign of sadness; it should rather be an expression of breathless expectation.  ( My Utmost for His Highest)
—————Oswald Chambers
The realm of God is dangerous.  You must enter into it and not just seek information about it.
——————Archbishop Anthony Bloom
………….and I have to say that much of my early life as a Believer, was just that!!  I viewed God as just a Doctrine…….and so I studied Doctrines……Armenism, Calvinism, Charismania, Pentecostalism,  Faith Healing, Name it Claim Wealth Doctrines, etc.  And that is what I did…..I sought more and more information…..but not a relationship with my Father in Heaven!!  I knew about His History but not so much about his person.  I know many very knowledgable men who claim that Doctrine is everything.  They are logical, systematic, clear and precise, convincing and inspiring………but it appears to me………they are also ineffective with Dead Faith and lots and lots of Knowledge about God but little Action.  They have taken little risk in their lives and what I have seen……….they have little joy………caught up in the seeking for more knowledge and the cares of this world.  Lots of discussion about who God is but little action of what He is telling them to do in practice of their Faith.  This is my observation and yes……………. I have been quite judgmental of them but I think and I hope…….. I am getting past that.  I want to learn from my friends……….not become like them or just judge them.  That doesn’t help me or challenge me spiritually.

This life is short and why do I want to live it just “working for the legal tender” as Jackson Browne sings in his famous song The Pretender.  Is my legacy important?  Should it be?  Why do so few people I know and you know take a risk??  I believe we are “Slaves to Fear”……we are afraid of the unknown, uncertainty, becoming poor, dying poor, not having enough of anything……..especially the American Dream.  And that’s why I love this song by Jonathan David and Melissa Helser.

I am no longer a Slave to Fear……….I am a Child of God
Am I called to be less daring than Joshua in the Battle of Jericho or Gideon when his army was reduced from 32,000 to 300?  They were mere men just like you and me!!!
I have to agree with Etheridge when he says:

The problem with modern Christianity’s obsession with principles is that it removes
any real conversation with God.  Find the principles, apply the principle
———what do you need God for?  So Oswald Chambers warns us,
“Never make a principle out of your experience;
let God be as original with other people as he is with you.”
So give me your original thought about your destiny
………share it………..
Come on……..
Be Un-American!  Take a Risk for a Change!!

Why I Need The Body Of Christ

If you haven’t noticed lately, the Church of Jesus Christ has got its problems!
Especially in the USA.
And I have been looking for a Church the past 25 years that doesn’t have problems.
Where everyone loves each other unconditionally and always get along.
Never quarreling or getting their feelings hurt and always serving and preferring each other to themselves!!
Praying and fasting daily for one another………..
And the rest of the community seeing their love for one another and realizing that “they have been with Jesus.”
Acts 4:13
You remember the boldness of Peter and John in the book of Acts……..Walking in the Spirit!
That’s the Church I have been looking for……
NO……………
I don’t smoke Crack Cocaine
and I can’t blame you if you think I do!
I am simply a Stupid Work in Progress…….an Idealist without patience, grace or mercy!
All those things that have been lavished upon me by my God, my wife and some friends….
And now, finally, I am realizing…….that if its gonna be, its up to me……
So I have learned two lessons in the last 9 months…..
THERE AIN’T NO PERFECT CHURCH!
BECAUSE EVERY CHURCH IS MADE UP OF IMPERFECT PEOPLE………………… LIKE ME!
We disagree.  We get our feelings hurt.  We hurt each other’s feelings.  We don’t show mercy or love or grace.
We separate on doctrines like Calvinism, Submission, Baptism, Praterism, Charismania, Missions and a hundred other doctrines…….
We cling to “Works” Salvation by doing good “church” works for recognition……
And we hold grudges and never ask for forgiveness…..
And we get NOTHING done for the Kingdom!
Nothing!
Because we are too busy playing games.
But the days are Evil and its time to stop playing games………so I have found an Imperfect Church, full of sinners!
And I am sure I will eventually be hurt by someone, insulted, disrespected, disliked………and other things that sinners do.
Feels just like my Family!!!
But I need the Body of Christ!
With all its imperfections and mistakes and stupidity!
And they need me…..with all my imperfections and mistakes and stupidity!
But not just on Sunday morning……..for an hour or two.
I want real fellowship similar to Acts 2: 42-47.
What about you?
Have you found an Imperfect group of Believers?

Where Have All The Missionaries Gone?

You might just say……….WHO  CARES?
BUT it is quite alarming!
The IMB run by the Southern Baptist Convention is making reductions every year.
From the Wall Street Journal, an article in Oct 2015….”Cash Strapped Missionaries Get a New Calling:  Home!”
The journal goes on to say…..

“The International Mission Board, an entity of the Southern Baptist Convention with 4,800 missionaries and 450 support staff,

plans to cut 600 to 800 people from its workforce, a 15% reduction.

It is starting by offering voluntary early retirement to veteran missionaries.

Since 2010, the organization has spent $210 million more than it has taken in, officials said. Last year, it had a $21 million shortfall.”

And then again last year, Feb 2016, another announcement by David Platt….

Six months after announcing plans to cut 600 to 800 missionaries and staff in order to balance its budget, the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) revealed today that it has lost 1,132 workers—almost twice as many as its low-end estimate.

In all, 983 missionaries and 149 US staff have accepted the IMB’s offer of voluntary early retirement or resignation. That brings the number of SBC missionaries in the field down from 4,700 to about 3,800—a return to 1993 levels.

But even more tragic……………this past weekend in Bangkok, Feb. 2017,

My friend and 30 year veteran missionary, Mak Sanglir, attended an IMB conference and the news wasINCREDIBLE!!

4000 MISSIONARIES ARE LEAVING THE FIELD!

NO FUNDING!!!

That’s right……………..you got it………4000!  And that’s just one Mission group.

And just tonight, just got word from another family I have visited in Phang Nga that has served in Thailand for 12 years……..Gone back Home….

So what is happening??

I must say that I still see the American church building bigger and better and barns……..Multi Million Dollar Barns!!!

Does your “life consist in the abundance of your possessions”?

See Luke 12: 13-21….Jesus had some interesting things to say about big barns and more possessions.

(By the way…..you don’t hear this parable taught very often.)

I still see Rich Christians getting Richer and I still hear people reminding me…..”Brother Keith…..remember…the Poor will always be with us.”

Apparently, the Rich will always be with us too, but they are NOT giving!

The DOW is up almost 15% since Nov, 2016………is your giving up 15%?  Is it even 15%?

I know accountants who handle taxes for multi-millionaires and they see where the money is going…….

And where it ain’t goin!  The Craving mentioned in 1 Timothy 6:10 is getting stronger!!!

Some of my friends are alarmed at me………..”Keith!!”, they say, “You can’t say that Brother, it will offend Rich Christians

Who might want to give to your ministry!  You are too judgmental and accusatory!!  Be kinder!”

No Question…….I am frustrated!!!  But I have my reasons….mainly, because I have traveled the World and see the great needs.

I have also experienced the blessing that comes from Giving to The Least!  I have witnessed abundant giving from people filled with the Holy Spirit…..

Who left incredible legacies……….and I want to be like them.

And not like the Rich Man mentioned by Jesus in the Luke 12 parable.  He was covetous and his motto was simple…….

“relax, eat, drink, be merry”

Well…….I don’t know about you……but those 4 acts come easy to me!

I don’t even have to think and I can do those 4 actions……but is that my calling?

Is that your calling?

I sincerely believe my calling is mentioned in Matthew 28 and 1 Peter 3:15 and I don’t believe it is an option or a special calling.

We all need to be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you……..

And we are ALL called to do it for ALL nations, not just the wealthiest..
